The Magic of Bali

12-Oct-2002 - Bali is mourning

Bali is in need of help to assist with the post-bombing relief efforts.

Financial support is needed to help the many victims, whatever nationality they have, the families of victims and those people in Kuta who lost homes and livelihood.
Bali needs all kind of help to solve the current crisis here and the many problems Bali will face if they tourists don't come back soon and our island begins to starve.

Local help organizations are arranging for food, grief counseling, trauma therapy and living basics for the victims and their families.

Hospitals generously treated patients best as they could, not bothering about the cost or payment.

BaliSOS volunteers temporarily coordinated all F&B supplies for Sanglah Hospital and purchased and supplied food, drinks and sanitary requirements not covered by direct donations or hospital administration.
BaliSOS did this from October 17 untill October 21, 2002.
These supplies were delivered to hospitalized victims of the terrorist bombing, their visiting families and volunteers working in the crisis center, the morgue and other areas of Sanglah Hospital.
The requests came from the Indonesian Crisis Center (Posko 3) and from the international Crisis Center in Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar.

During this period there were only 5-10 victims hospitalized in other hospitals in Denpasar, outside of Sanglah hospital.
BaliSOS monitored the well being of these victims too and informed other help organizations and doctors to make them aware were help was needed.

All details of this operation are listed in our Financial Report October 2002
BaliSOS received donations from six different donors during this period.
We did this out of an emergency and to provide immediate help only.
We have no intentions to establish BaliSOS as a field help organization that seeks donations.
Only if emergency requires immediate action we shall act and help immediately again.

Bali SOS has received requests from many different groups here on Bali that want to give as much help as possible.
Some have asked to have their names and bank accounts published here.
Until today, Bali SOS has not received reliable and sound background information from any of these groups, though we do not doubt their integrity,
We shall not publish any requests for donations or bank accounts here, unless we receive appropriate background information including organisations structure, history and recommendations, sound proposals and concepts.

You find the current information we have about Bali based volunteer groups & help organisations here: Messages & Forum and
here Minutes of coordination meeting between many volunteer associations at Sanglah Hospital on Saturday 19/10/02

The newly formed Bali Recovery Group is a coordination committee composed of some lNGO's working to help the victims of the Bali bomb blast on 12 October.
The objective of the group is to coordinate activities between organizations in order to deliver the best services and minimize duplication of effort
Bali Recovery Group does not collect funds itself.
Potential donors should contact the individual members who fit their sponsorship profile.

We hope to be able to publish financial reports and other information of these organisations here and will update this page immediately when as we learn more.

We have received many inquiries from individuals, groups and organisations who want to donate or already have funds waiting to be released.
We have also received and continue to receive emergency requests from victims, hospitals or others affected and in need of help.
We network all these requests with locally available helpers and funds we know of, as best and as fast as we can.
BaliSOS is tracing all those requests and whenever neccessary we work on solving the problems directly and on our own with the help of many local donators and volunteers.

We shall publish the names of these donators, of our volunteers and the financial reports here as soon as we find the time to do this.

Please let us have any available information about:

  • injured victims who were not hospitalized and are without proper medical or social help
  • emergency help requests
  • help organisations who want to publish information
  • requests for donation
  • information about about funds available right now!

Living here on the Island of the Gods, inspite of the bmombings, most of us do believe in miracles and wonder:
We hope to see all the individuals and groups wanting to help Bali join under one umbrella in this time of darkness.
Showing the world and ourselves that all the people living on Bali work peacefully together, regardless of nation, religion or whatever else may separate us.

We hope that the people of Bali, as they are deeply rooted in Adat Bali and the system of the banjar,
where all people are bound to help each other and live together, relying on each other trustfully,
will find together for a new kind of SARENG SAMI and begin something new:
A Banjar Bali (Bali Village Association) or Koperasi Bali Mertulung Sareng Sami in balinese language, which could coordinate with all the many individuals, groups and professional organisations who dedicate themselves to help solving the current crisis here and the many problems Bali will face if they tourists don't come back soon and our island begins to starve.

Such a joint foundation could help coordination between foreign help organisations and banjars, receive and distribute incoming donations reliably and transparent to other organisations here or directly to those in need, and try to find solutions for a better Bali where our children have a future and visitors from all over the world feel home and safe.

Please contact BanjarBali@BaliSOS.com if you want to help plant this tree!
