Bali Update October 4, 2003
A number of activities have been planned by various organisations
and local community groups in Bali over the commemoration
period.
Australian
Bali Memorial Services:
The Bali memorial service will take place in the presence of the
Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon John Howard, MP, at the Garuda
Wisnu Kencana Cultural Centre (GWK) on 12 October. The venue is
an outdoor, hill-top setting with a Balinese ambience –
located about 20-30 minutes from Kuta.
The memorial service will be for Australian survivors and the
families of Australian victims of the tragedy. Survivors and families
of victims of other affected nationalities, are also invited to
the service, especially all those from Bali.
The service will be open to members of the public, and all Australians
and other nationals are welcome to attend. Volunteers who assisted
in the aftermath of the tragedy are particularly welcome.
The memorial service will begin at 8 am. Parking for the general
public is available at the GWK. Security will be tight and members
of the public are asked to arrive by 7am sharp to enable seating
by 7:30. Long security delays can be expected after that time.
We recommend that you do not bring a bag to the service. Marshals
will provide water and tissues at the service. We also recommend
you wear a hat and sunglasses and apply sunscreen before coming
to the service. If you do bring a bag to the service, it must
be no bigger than a standard A4 sheet of paper (30x20 cm). Please
be aware that all bags will be searched on entry.
